Hi, I’m Ren! Ren, The House Hen. Sometimes know as “poofy,” “screm,” “blobbo,” or “zoomie.”

I’m not a writer, but I am a chicken enthusiast. I’ve been on Medium, since January 2021, and on earth since 1994. My birthday is July 4th — that’s why I’m so independent.

“She who visits Vegas, stays in Vegas”

As the subtitle reads, I’m vegan and have chickens as indoor pets. My pronouns are she/her. One of my personal interests is suffering reduction —which is…

5 amusing facts about my indoor pet chickens

The first time my chicken story wasn’t curated

After a 15 story curation streak publishing with Creatures publication, Is It Wrong To Have An Indoor Pet Chicken? was not selected for curation under the Pets topic. I noticed a pattern where my stories in this publication would be curated two hours after they were posted.

Am I at risk?

On May 20, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a Salmonella outbreak of 163 cases across 43 states linked to backyard chickens, ducks, and other poultry. To prevent the spread, they recommend chicken keepers stop kissing and snuggling chickens, and take other precautions like washing their hands, maintaining a clean coop and supplies, and handling eggs carefully. Tasks that should already be apart of routine chicken care.

I am pledging to complete David Majister’s 30-Day writing challenge. The original rules are here:

My rules

  • Submit 25 articles to 15 different publications in 25 days.
  • 10 submissions must be to publications I’ve never previously published with.
  • 2 must be self-published. With Medium’s shift toward a more relational platform, I’d like to test the performance of my stories without a publication’s audience. Additionally, this will test my confidence in publishing a story that hasn’t been reviewed and approved by an editor.
  • This will span from June 6 to June 30, 2021, and I will report my results on July 1, 2021.

My goals

5 meaningful gestures to show support

Our companion animals aren’t just “pets.” They sleep in our beds, join us on vacation, eat food from the dinner table (sneakily), and some come to work with us. The death of a companion animal can be as traumatic as losing a human family member or friend.

Why they exist, where to buy them, and how to use them.

I have a question for you. And, don’t worry, it’s multiple choice.

Pet Ownership | Perspective

Spoiler: It’s not.

Cats crapping in plastic litter boxes. Dogs walking on leashes. And yes, chickens living in the house. The ways in which we care for our pets are far from natural — and that’s okay!

Animals inspire immense creativity in me, and I bet they do the same for you too! Especially when it comes to our pets, we come up with an infinite number of goofy nicknames (“chonk,” “poofy,” etc.) and improvise silly songs to sing to them.
